Hi there! My name is Rebecca Howie (she/her,) I am a 25 year old embroidery artist based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. I first began embroidering about 4 years ago just for something to do, but it quickly became so much more than that. I have been making art my entire life, but I find that I am able to express myself and my ideas more through embroidery than through any other medium. I am originally self-taught, however, in 2019 I was a student in a textiles program in St. John’s, NL, where I was able to improve my skills even more. The textiles program also opened up a world of other fiber and textile crafts that I have come to love, and still try to work on in my free time - you can see some of this work on the “Other Work” section of my website. Although I am still finding my style for embroidery, I am inspired by nature, animals, and history.

I began a small embroidery business in 2019 when a friend commissioned me to do work for them, and by some stroke of luck, other people have trusted me to bring their ideas to life through embroidery. I mainly do commission work, but sometimes I will sell my own work when I run out of space to keep it in my own home. I have taught two embroidery workshops and I hope to do more in the future as I love teaching them.

Outside of embroidery and textiles, I hold a BA (Hons.) from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, majoring in History. I originally graduated with a BA in 2019, but after a year in the textiles program, I returned to MUNL in 2020 to do my honours. I hope one day to work in a museum or in an archive, while of course continuing to learn and grow my textile skills.

Thank you so much for visiting my website, I appreciate you being here! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me through my email: rebeccajane.embroidery@gmail.com - you can do this through the contact tab at the top of my website.
