Woman’s Prayer Book

This is my take on what a woman’s prayer book might look like today.

In my third year of university I took a history course about women in medieval Europe and my professor brought our class to the archives to show us prayer books that were made for women. When I first saw these books I was in awe for two reasons: 1) They were 500 years old, and 2) the artwork was so beautiful. It was all hand painted, and I just never stopped thinking about it. I always wanted to incorporate the artwork into my own somehow.

If you know me you know that I’ve always been interested in women’s history. Throughout history it seems like the right to our bodies has always been a tug of war, and it still feels that way today. So I figured I would take the design from these prayer books and make it into something meaningful to me - which is to continue working towards dismantling oppressive systems, and always challenging them.

This took 40 hours.

Cherry Blossom Tree

Inspired by the many pictures of cherry blossom trees that pop up in the spring, the leaves of this tree are made entirely of french knots. I was interested in creating a sense of movement in this piece.

Autumn Tree for Ghosts

For this piece I wanted to capture my favorite elements of autumn, the colors of the trees and Halloween. The leaves are made entirely of french knots - a stitch that requires patience and practice. I like to challenge myself with my work, and french knots certainly do the job.

Whale Sweater

I bleach-dyed this sweater and realized I missed the front, so I embroidered this humpback whale to fill up the empty space. At 8 inches long, this is my largest embroidery to date.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!

To welcome my favourite season I decided to embroider my favourite Halloween special.
